Who is Kuumba Lynx?

Kuumba Lynx (KL) is an Arts and Education Organization founded in 1996 by three women, J. Villegas, L. Garcia, & J. Bullie.

Our Mission

KL has a mission of working to provide access to programs that preserve, promote and present urban arts & culture.

Empowerment

KL seeks to empower youth and their communities by employing Hip-Hop culture as both an art form & vehicle for intergenerational and cross-cultural dialogue.

Health

KL believes in developing healthy hearts, minds, and bodies so that strong community foundations can thrive.

Creative Literacy

KL is dedicated to providing programs for creative expression & literacy for Chicago’s youth and their families so to increase social consciousness, community analysis & exchange, self-reflection, global action, inner peace, and universal freedom.

How We Do It

Our goal is currently achieved through three core areas: Drop In Arts & Arts Residencies, Kuumba Lynx Performance Ensemble (KLPE), and Community Cultural Events. KL programs push community reflection, critical thinking and the active exchanging of ideas.

How Can I Be Down?

Schools & Organizations

KL can provide a workshop or longer Arts Residency at your school or organization.  You can choose from our menu or work with an artist to develop your own program. KL workshops/training can offer CPDU credits.

Every spring we present a new work at a local theatre space. KLPE tours excerpts throughout the spring and summer of each year.

Our productions attract a wide range of audience members. The Kuumba Lynx Performance Ensemble represents the diversity of the Chi Town.

Youth

Drop in for a free Hip Hop Arts class at Clarendon Park, 4501 N. Clarendon.  

Classes are held Mondays and Wednesday, 4:30-7:30pm in Graffiti Art, Spoken Word, Deejaying, Theatre, Footwork, Breakin & various cultural dance.  

New Hip Hop Theatre KLPE Apprenticeships form every fall.  To join call 773.550.3849.

Teaching Artists/Creative Directors

Kuumba Lynx believes in mentorship between youth and adults. We encourage Teaching Artists to share their own experiences and techniques while learning to work within the KL creative philosophy and process of training and teaching.

KL opens our Teaching Artist Roster every spring and summer. If you are interested in working with us submit a resume or give us a call 773.550.3849.
